Bus Stop Amenity Balancing Project

At Pierce Transit, we want to make sure our shelters and other bus stop amenities are placed where they benefit the most riders. That’s why we’re launching the multi-year Amenity Balancing Project in 2025. This effort will help ensure that shelters and trash cans are available at stops with the most need, improving comfort and accessibility for thousands of riders.

Why Are Amenities Being Moved?

Over time, ridership patterns change, and some bus stops now have very few boardings but still have shelters and trash cans, while other stops with higher ridership lack these amenities. To ensure our limited resources are used effectively and provide the best experience for as many people as possible, we are realigning shelters and trash cans based on current ridership patterns. Over the next several years, the Amenity Balancing Project will reallocate amenities based on current ridership:

• Starting in 2025, trash cans and shelters at stops that do not meet the ridership standards will be relocated to qualifying stops.

• If a shelter is removed due to damage or construction and the stop lacks sufficient ridership, the shelter will be relocated to a stop that meets the current standards.

What Are The Benefits?

More riders will have shelter and benefit from additional passenger amenities!

• Shelter coverage for 600,000+ additional boardings, including 2,000 wheelchair boardings.

• More shelters at schools and underserved areas.

• Improved accessibility at upgraded stops.

Our Current Standards

• Shelters are placed at stops with 8 or more boardings per weekday.

• Trash cans are placed at stops with 5 or more boardings per weekday.

• Our goal is to provide a bench at every stop.

Moving Forward

Ridership patterns continue to evolve, and we are committed to making sure bus stop amenities are placed where they benefit the most riders. Going forward, Pierce Transit will regularly monitor ridership trends and make more frequent adjustments to ensure amenities are aligned with changing passenger needs. By taking a proactive approach, we can better serve our community, improve rider comfort, and make the most of our available resources.
