Pierce Transit has partnered with Seattle Department of Transportation, King County Metro and Throne Labs to provide customers with a smart, modular public restroom at Lakewood Transit Center. The Throne unit is fully ADA-accessible and features a flushing toilet, a running-water sink, a baby-changing station, and complimentary menstrual products. It requires no connection to water or sewer and runs mainly on solar power. Historically, public restrooms at many of Pierce Transit’s facilities were vandalized, resulting in costly, frequent repairs and closure due to safety concerns. Customer feedback indicates public restroom access is strongly desired.
Throne is free to use and can be accessed as follows:
- Smartphone QR code
- App
- Texting phone number/code
- Tap card
Access information and directions are found on the Throne unit’s exterior.
“Pierce Transit is proud to partner with Throne Labs to pilot a clean and accessible restroom facility for riders at the Lakewood Transit Center,” said Adam Davis, Pierce Transit’s Chief Maintenance Officer. “Public restrooms are an important part of the transit experience. We aim to provide amenities that help riders feel more comfortable and supported, which can contribute to increased ridership and stronger community connections. Throne’s innovative, fast-to-deploy model is a promising complement to the reliable, community-focused service we strive to deliver.”
