Extended: Free Rides to Cooling Centers through July 23

High temperatures are forecast to continue through Thursday, so Pierce Transit is extending the offer of free rides to cooling centers through end of service on Thursday, July 23. We may extend or reduce depending on the forecast. The free rides to cooling centers and shelters are in effect on Pierce Transit services through end of service on Thursday, July 23. The free round trips are available throughout the day and evening on those dates for passengers who tell the driver they are traveling to or from a cooling center or shelter. Pierce Transit to Offer Free Rides to Cooling Centers July 19 through 21

The Puget Sound area will experience high temperatures beginning Sunday, July 19. To help those who need transportation to get out of the heat and shelter during hot weather, Pierce Transit is partnering with Pierce County Human Services to provide free rides on bus, Runner and SHUTTLE paratransit (for registered SHUTTLE customers) to local cooling centers and shelters. Pierce Transit Board Places Measure to Maintain and Expand Transit on the November 3 Ballot

Voters will decide in November whether to fund expanded local bus and transit service through a change in the local sales tax. On July 13, 2026, the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners voted to place a measure to maintain and expand transit on the November 3, 2026, general election ballot. With the adoption of Resolution 2026-006, the measure moves to the Pierce County Auditor, giving voters in the Pierce Transit service area the decision on whether to fund an expansion of local transit service within Pierce Transit’s service area.
